Quebec is perched on a headland at 98m above sea level at the confluence of the Saint-Charles River and the St. Lawrence. From the Algonquin word Kebec, "where the river narrows", the St. Lawrence river is here, just 1 km wide. 

Before Europeans arrival, hunters and fishermen Iroquoian village of Stadacona lived there.
